Hi, I’m Dan — oil painter, professional over-thinker, and occasional paintbrush whisperer. I work mostly in oils because they’re spread pretty thin, dramatic, and take forever to dry—just like most of my stories.
My work lives somewhere between classical moodiness and modern-day existential crisis. I’m inspired by light, shadow, and that strange, beautiful tension between what we see and what we feel. Currently walking the line between impulse and inspiration. Luckily, I’ve got experience walking a straight line when it matters.
When I’m not elbow-deep in linseed oil or arguing with a canvas, I’m probably staring intensely at something “for reference.” Let’s just say it’s all part of the process.

Though I’ve only been (seriously) painting for two years, I’m no stranger to fine art. Check out the work of my father, John Smith-Amato >> HERE
